Amy Tan Two Kinds English Literature Essay.
working thesis: “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” and “A Small, Good Thing” are similar and different in their themes, motifs, and points of view, as both influence the familial relationships by depicting the struggles of isolation and hardship , but third person omniscient accurately depicts the need for support and connectedness between people and families
You could work for the government and get good retirement.
I have chosen the first topic in which I will compare “A Small, Good Thing”, a third person omniscient, to “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, a third person limited. I’m choosing to compare these two stories because they share the common theme of bad things happening to good people in the search of independence. Both characters, Scotty and Connie, are teenagers who are trying to break away from their families for freedom, be it by walking to school without ones parents or being a typical rebellious teenage girl. In this search for freedom both characters experience struggles, one losing his life literally and the other losing her life figuratively. Third person limited, a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character, is the most common point of view in modern day short story writing compared to third person omniscient, a method of storytelling in which the narrators know the feelings of all the characters. I believe that third person limited is the most common point of view in writing modern day short stories because it allows the reader to really get inside the characters head, knowing what he or she feels.
