Theme : Second Chance
This theme ties quite closely with Emerson's first theme, Redemption of the Soul.
With a "Second Chance", sinners are able to "redeem" themselves before their deaths, for their deaths are destined for either heaven or hell based on their nature when sinners were still alive.
If sinners happen to redeem themselves, then they get to live a second life (the after life).
Throughout this essay, Emerson gives off hints about the second chances as well as examples (the redemption of the soul)to help sinners reach and obtain God's grace.
