Abstract a school wants to teach Indonesian as a second language and is using a consultant to figure out the best way to do this. This report found that children need to learn basics from the start of language learning, verbal aids should be used and that language learning needs to be interesting and engaging. It was recommended that a program mastering basics be taught before moving on to more complex lessons, that visual aids be used in every lesson and that an app should be made to make a game from language learning. Introduction A local school has utilised the services of a consultant to try to help them solve their issue. The issue is that they want to teach Indonesian to their children as a second language. The school needs to know how to best deliver this language learning to their students. It is important to try to learn the best ways to deliver the new language program to students so that it can be as effective and as efficient as possible. A language program needs to be made to complement the ages of the children and also to make the learning engaging enough so that the children absorb it (Cook, 2013). The aim of this report is to research different ways of teaching a second language to primary school children and also to write a report with recommendations on the structure and delivery of the new language program. Findings Learning the basics at the start The authors state that a second language should always be taught with the basic being mastered first and this should include numbers, the alphabet and key words in the language (Leung, Davison and Mohan, 2014). This is critical because children need to learn language at an early age as possible and if they can learn the basics first when they are as young as possible their learning will be better than if they were to be older when they first take up the language. This is identified in the graph below and, as you can see, when children are between 3 and 7 they have the best chance of becoming native in the language than compared to learning at any other age older than this. Using verbal aids to learn It was also found that simply teaching language to children in a verbal way was not as effective as the use of other methods. Children have not yet learned their own English as well as they can because of their young age so it is best to use visual aids to help them to learn their second language. This includes showing pictures of objects and items and teaching the children the words for this in their second language (Tomlinson, 2012). Children can benefit from making the association in their minds of words and items so that their learning can be faster and so that they can learn what the words look like, leading them to having a greater chance of being fluent quicker. Making learning interesting It is not enough to simply teach the language to the students as they may not be as interested as they could be. The learning of a second language must be delivered in a way which is interesting and engaging so that students enjoy it and so that they can keep interested as the more interested and engaged that they are in the learning, the more information they retain. Golonka et al. (2014) suggests that the use of technology, such as computers, tablets and the internet, can be useful to getting children to be more connected to the learning of a second language. Getting children playing games may also have benefits to keeping them learning and interested in learning because they will feel just like they are playing and that they learning is not tedious. Ideas for conclusions This report has found that the basic elements of language should always be taught first, such as basic numbers, objects or letters as a basic introduction into the Indonesian language. Also, the use of visual ads is a good thing to help learning so that students can link objects and words and can learn written Indonesian easier than just having verbal lessons. Finally, the learning of a second language needs to be interesting and engaging; preferably through the use of technology. Ideas for recommendations The school should develop a program which gradually develops the language in the minds of the students. This can involve teaching of basic letters, numbers and phrases at the start, before moving on to sentences then onto longer conversations. This can start in their prep classes and needs to be planned so that the students have mastered all of the basics before they move on to learning sentences or phrases. Parents of the students should be encouraged to practice the basic words, objects and numbers with their children outside of school hours to support their learning. The school should put an emphasis on using visual aids everyday along with the other language learning activities. Teachers of the second language should have pictures of the words that they want to teach and go through them once a day. The first set should be the numbers 1 to 10, then the whole alphabet. Pictures of tables, chairs and basic everyday items can then be used. These visual ads should be basic to start and then more advanced as the child move through their grades at school. Students should be rewarded when they can identify all of the objects and words on the visual aids. An internet app which is comprised of a language game can be used once a day in the classroom to try to get kids to want to learn and to enjoy learning the new language. This can be developed by the school and can be used by students both in and outside of the classroom. This will help to further get children learning whilst they are having fun. The school can bring in a developer to make the app which is funded by a school bake sale that gets students to bake some cakes and sell them for money.
