Essay on the gender difference in history: women in China and Japan.

This is how the peoples of antiquity and of the Orient have regarded women; they have recognized what is the proper position for women far better than we have, we with our Old French gallantry and insipid women-veneration, that highest flower of Christian-Germanic stupidity which has served only to make women so rude and arrogant that one is sometimes reminded of the sacred apes of Benares which, conscious of their own sanctity and inviolability, thought themselves at liberty to do whatever they pleased.

At this year's Super Bowl (B) there were so many commercials aimed at men with families, people coined a new phrase: Dadvertising. Men are doing more to support women at home and in the workplace with every passing year. I truly believe we are moving in the right direction. And to help speed things along, here are eight (C) reasons why all men should lean in:

So what does a man leaning in look like? He looks like Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy [See (A) below for Dave Goldberg's annotation], who missed Opening Day last year because his wife was giving birth. Other athletes and sportscasters criticized his choice, but Murphy made family his priority. A few months later, he earned his first All-Star appearance. Or he looks like John Skipper, president of ESPN Inc., who knows that to appeal to the broadest audience possible, he needs a workplace full of diverse voices. So Skipper demands that every open job have a slate of candidates that includes women and minorities. He wants the best, the brightest, and a bigger pool to choose from. 1. We're all biased. If you think you're absolutely positively NOT biased, chances are greater that you really are. When institutions or individuals are confident in their own powers of objectivity, they often fail to correct for bias. It's hard to admit, but all of us — including me (D) — are biased. Our culture teaches us from an early age to expect men to lead and women to be communal. This colors our perceptions; women are often described as "aggressive," "too ambitious," or "not well liked" for doing the same things that would be perceived as "confident" and "strong" in a man (E). When we correct for these biases, we get better results. So the next time you hear a female colleague described with these terms (or "difficult"…or "political"…or "crazy,") ask yourself: if a guy did the same thing, would I judge him differently?

That the property which has cost men long years of toil and effort, and been won with so much difficulty, should afterwards come into the hands of women, who then, in their lack of reason, squander it in a short time, or otherwise fool it away, is a grievance and a wrong as serious as it is common, which should be prevented by limiting the right of women to inherit. In my opinion, the best arrangement would be that by which women, whether widows or daughters, should never receive anything beyond the interest for life on property secured by mortgage, and in no case the property itself, or the capital, except when there cease to be male descendants. The people who make money are men, not women; and it follows from this that women are neither justified in having unconditional possession of it, nor fit persons to be entrusted with its administration. When wealth, in any true sense of the word, that is to say, funds, houses or land, is to go to them as an inheritance they should never be allowed the free disposition of it. In their case a guardian should always be appointed; and hence they should never be given the free control of their own children, wherever it can be avoided.

5. Happier marriages/domestic partnerships. Women still do the majority of the housework and child care even though 70 percent of mothers work outside the home. When husbands share in domestic chores, wives are less depressed, marital conflicts decrease, and satisfaction rises. In couples where a wife earns half the income and household chores are split 50/50 (H), the risk of divorce is reduced by about half.
