IELTS Discussion Essay Model Answer

I am interested about the question from Kamlinder:
“Discussion Essay statement:–
Some people believe that there should be fixed punishments for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstances of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.”
I believe the first thing we should do to answer this by paraphrasing the question. Yet I wonder, since It is a quite long sentence and the question divide into 2 main part, do we have to combine those two into 1 paraphrase sentence OR it’s ok to make 2 sentence before we arrived to our opinion?

Hi Liz! Thank you for all the good advice you share with us. Specially, these essay models, which are great study material for students like me preparing to take the exam.
After doing your advanced lessons, I came across the following essay question: “Some people feel crime rates are best lowered by increasing prison sentences”. Discuss this topic. What are some alternatives to raising prison sentences?
In this case, it is not clear to me whether I have to give my opinion or not. Also, I think I have to discuss both sides, even though they only introduce one, is that right? What is the correct approach to write an introduction and conclusion for this essay?
I’d be greatful if you can help me with these doubts.

We are very confused about crime and punishment – especially the purpose of the latter. Or at least I am. A report from the National Audit Office last week showed that nearly two thirds of offenders sentenced to less than 12 months custody re-offend within a year of release. This was taken as a good reason for dispensing with short jail terms and focusing more on community penalties, even though these are no more likely to stop re?offending (or reconviction, which is the more accurate description).

You would write “People have different opinions about what punishment children should receive for committing crimes. While some people think children should receive adult punishment, others feel it is too harsh.” My background statement introduces the topic and my thesis introduces the two sides. At no time should you turn your discussion essay into an advantage disadvantage essay. And you should never learn a formulaic sentence to memorise and write in your test.
