These tests determine students' English language ability and appropriate placement in college courses. Students with less than college-level English language proficiency will most likely be placed in "developmental" courses that count as electives while they develop their college-level academic language skills. Although this is a beneficial experience and will help ensure students' success in college, ELLs need to understand that this may increase the amount of time they spend in college before receiving a degree.
