If only I had not lied on my education status to an ongoing interview, I would have gotten myself a scholarship to a university of my choice. It was on mid-August 2013 when my phone rang. On the line was a gentleman asking my name among other identification details. I wish I could have mentioned all the correct details. The call was from the scholarship foundation. They were conducting a phone interview as part of their university scholarship program. If only I had not been anxious, I would have gotten the scholarship. The gentleman from the other end of the line asked several questions concerning my grades at the time as well as my interests. I answered very fast that I was a higher achiever and always at the top of my class. It was a lie.
I thought that by lying that I was always at the top of the class would get me the scholarship. At the time, I did not think that he would consult my teachers as well as my parents concerning the same issue. Had I known that he would ask my teachers about my grades and interests, I would have told the truth. The gentleman promised to get back at me immediately after confirming with my parents and teachers. Telling the truth could have saved me from the embarrassment I had to go through after he consulted my teachers and asked for records of my performance. When he got back at me, he asked the same questions to which I answered as I had before. It was quite embarrassing when he said that he was looking at my performance records at the moment, and it did not concur with my answers. He finished by saying it was so unfortunate that I had to lie in an interview. Had I told the truth about my performance, I could have gotten a scholarship for higher learning. I learnt the hard way that lying was one of the worst things that one can do.
